Initially, the new religion appeared to be nothing more than a branch of Judaism. Jesus was perceived as a teacher, healer, and a commoner, who ended up being executed as a public criminal. Both, Romans and Jews, feared that popularity, which Jesus evoked in the public could pose a threat to the established social order.
